Highlights include a history of the society, time lines of communications technology, oral histories from leaders in the field and profiles of leading ComSoc engineers. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3. LoCicero 3.3 CHAPTER NEWS http://www.comsoc.org/e-news/2002/oct/index.html#CHAPTER%20NEWS Fasih Masood, Chairman of the Karachi Chapter, reports on the launch of Digital Subscriber Line Service (DSL) in Pakistan, and the proposal to rotate the International Multi-topic Conference (INMIC) among the three IEEE Sections of Pakistan: Karachi, Lahore & Islamabad. 3.4 TECHNICAL COMMITTEE NEWS ComSoc technical committees are currently undergoing recertification (which recurs every three years), with the goal being to have all committees recertified at GLOBECOM 2002. TC chairs should contact Bill Tranter (VC - Technical Activities) if they need a copy of the re-certification questionnaire. 3.5 STANDARDS NEWS The next IEEE 802 Plenary Meeting is scheduled Nov. 10-15, 2002, in Kauai, Hawaii. Birthdays: October 6, 1866 Reginald Aubrey Fessenden, pioneer in radio technology and inventor of the heterodyne principle. October 12, 1801 Carl August von Steinheil, a pioneer of electromagnetic telegraphy Carl Emil Krarup, another prominent European telegrapher who also did important telephone work, including the invention of the Krarup Cable for long-distance transmission. October 19, 1839 Almon Breese Strowger, who developed the first commercial automatic telephone-switching system. November 19, 1938 Ted Turner, who started with billboard advertising, expanded into UHF television, and then began building a national network using commercial satellite transmission. But it was CNN, his second satellite venture launched in 1980, which had the biggest impact. November 25, 1858 Sir Jagadis Chandra Bose: A pioneering electrical physicist who contributed significantly to, among other things, the development of wireless. Events: October 4, 1957 The first artificial satellite, Sputnik 1, was launched by the Soviet Union, ushering in the "Space Age." October 27, 1864 The Royal Society received a paper from James Clerk Maxwell entitled "A dynamical theory of the electromagnetic field." Maxwell presented this seminal paper in person a few weeks later on 8 December. October 29, 1938 A CBS broadcast of an adaptation of H. G. Wells' novel War of the Worlds caused mass hysteria. November 11, 1973 Ethernet was demonstrated for the first time, by Robert Metcalfe, of Xerox's Palo Alto Research Center, after earlier (on 22 May 1973) describing it in a memo titled "Alto Ethernet."
